There are two things every Italian loves, family and good food.
The traditional Italian wedding cake is a coconut filled white cake with cream cheese frosting. But there are plenty of other cakes Italians are known for that would suffice as a wedding cake. Three Italian cakes that might suit your fancy are Torta Chantilly which is a sponge cake covered in white chocolate flakes and a sweetened whipped cream, St. Honore cake which is a complicated but indulgent cake of rich pastry filled with cream and saturated in rum, and finally a classic fruit tart, known as Crustata de fruta. If you are looking for tradition for your Italian wedding cake, these cakes can be found at Italian bakeries.
If you love Italian food, but are looking for modern than traditional, think tiramisu, a favorite with coffee liqueur and mascarpone cheese, strawberries zabaglione, which is a refreshing dessert of strawberries laced with a sweet cream marsala sauce, or simple vanilla ice cream with limoncello or amaretto sauce. Italians won't discriminate if it isn't cake at a wedding, as long as it is good!
Most weddings have a cocktail hour, Italian weddings have a "Vienna Hour" marked by a table of delicious assorted Italian pastries including the classic canoli and a variety of after dinner drinks such as Port, Sambuca, or Anise. These are traditional options that the "old school" Italian men will be sure to appreciate.
If you are having a simple and casual affair, biscotti dipped in chocolate and espresso is a great Italian dessert combination or a classic wedding treat of candy covered almonds, which are also a symbol of fertility (wink, wink).
Whichever dessert you chose, make your decision the way a real Italian would and taste it all and enjoy every minute!
